The AHOY Saturday Club is called Shipmates and is for young people aged between 8 and 18.
We provide our Shipmates with support and training over several years to learn how to sail, row and operate powerboats, gaining Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and British Rowing (BR) national qualifications.
We also incorporate soft skills such as teamwork, confidence building and verbal and nonverbal communication skills into all of our sessions. We measure the impact of this by using two surveys, one at the beginning of the term and one at the end of the term. Time and time again this data shows just how big an impact AHOY has on young people’s lives often giving them opportunities and career options that they would not have had otherwise.
Additionally, Shipmates will have the opportunity to earn their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, which will include volunteering, learning new skills, improving physical fitness and health, and completing a two-day expedition.
Many of our Shipmates go on to either join our apprenticeship scheme or come back to AHOY as volunteers.
“The whole sailing experience was amazing, and it was great to learn new things. At the start I was very nervous because I’ve never been on a boat before, but it was really fun and can’t wait to do it again.”
